Our Language Pillars
How we support language development and bilingualism
Children’s whole linguistic universe is welcome at Language Wonder Lab.
The children who walk through our door on Saturday morning bring their whole selves. That includes every language they have ever heard, every grandmother’s voice, every bedtime song, every playground argument, every word they know how to say when something matters to them.
We welcome all of it!
-
Oracy First
We start with receptive and oral skills and build up to reading and writing as developmentally appropriate.
-
Comprehensible Input
Sensory and linguistict supports to make content comprehensible.
-
Languaging
Language is also a verb. People around the world use language in many different ways. Linguistic creativity and translanguaging are key skills that bilinguals/multilinguals practice all the time.
-
Metalinguistic Awareness
We explicitly teach children about language and the language/bilingual development process.
-
Recasting, not correcting
Mistakes are a typical part of living and also of using a language. When children make a mistake, we model for them by repeating the accurate term back to them.
-
Growth, not Levels
We don’t label children based on their stage of bilingual development. We encourage a growth mindset and focus on taking chances and creating things with language.
